Webster County Health Unit

Food Safety

The goal of the Food Safety Program is to take a proactive approach to ensure food sold and served in Webster County is safe, properly labeled, and made under sanitary conditions.

Staff routinely inspect restaurants, school cafeterias, convenience stores, Farmer's Markets, catering companies, and other businesses where foods are cooked and served. Inspectors work with non-profit organizations holding fundraisers or hosting community events to ensure food is safe. Staff also inspect temporary food vendors that sell food at community festivals and events. In addition, staff inspect food that may be distressed due to a vehicle accident, restaurant fire, flood or other emergency situation.

Wastewater Program

With the growing population in Webster County, the risk of water contamination by human waste is greatly increasing. Health Unit inspectors issue permits for onsite wastewater systems and provide inspections to ensure that reported systems meet requirements for depth and setback distance from wells, waterways and property lines to decrease the chances for discharge into drinking water sources. Staff also respond to complaints about illegal installations, violations and failing systems.

Well Water Collection

You can reduce your risk for developing waterborne illnesses by testing your private well at least once a year, and more often if you notice a change in color, smell or taste. The Health Unit offers water sample test kits at no charge to residents who wish to have their well water tested.
